Once upon a time,a handful of students gathered around a simple idea: that the best conversations begin with curiosity. What started as late-night debates between friends slowly grew into a community where ideas are welcomed, perspectives are challenged with respect, and every voice has the chance to grow. Today, the University of Nigeria Debating Society is home to students from every walk of campus life. Some are discovering debate for the first time, others pursuing excellence on competitive stages, but all united by a shared love of learning, thoughtful dialogue, and the courage to speak with conviction.

Through the Years

Foundations

Long before UNDS became a familiar name on national and international stages, the University of Nigeria had already built a reputation for producing exceptional thinkers, advocates, and public leaders. Somewhere in the 1990s, that tradition found a home in the University of Nigeria Debating Society. Although much of this early history survives only through the memories of alumni, the Society quietly nurtured generations of speakers, writers, and critical thinkers, laying the foundation for everything that would follow.

Resurgence

Resurgence

After a period of dormancy, UNDS found new life in 2018 when a coalition of students from both the Nsukka and Enugu campuses revived the Society with the support of the Students' Affairs Unit. The years that followed were spent rebuilding—not just membership, but culture. Internal training returned, members once again represented the university at national tournaments, and by 2020 the Society was confident enough to host the 8th Nigerian Debate Championship. That momentum soon crossed borders. In 2021, UNDS represented Nigeria at tournaments across Africa and Asia, becoming the only African team to break at UET IV while also competing at Covenant University Invitational and PAUDC, announcing to the wider debating community that UNDS was back.

Key Milestones

  • Society officially revived (2018)
  • Hosted Nigerian Debate Championship VIII
  • International debut across Africa and Asia
  • Only African team to break at UET IV
  • PAUDC representation
Rise to Prominence

Rise to Prominence

With its foundations restored, UNDS entered its most decorated era. The Society evolved from simply attending tournaments to consistently shaping them. Across 2022 and 2023, members reached finals, won speaker and adjudicator awards, represented Nigeria at WUDC, and steadily established UNDS as one of the country's strongest debating institutions. The defining moment came at ANUDC 2023, where UNDS emerged champions of both the Open and Novice categories while collecting multiple individual honours. By 2024, the Society had earned a reputation not merely for winning tournaments, but for producing exceptional speakers, judges, and trainers across every level of competition.

Key Milestones

  • ANUDC Open & Novice Champions ('23)
  • National Debate Championship Champions
  • Multiple Best Speaker & Judge medals
  • WUDC representation
  • National championship victories
